We were at a loss knowing how to move forward with our 2yr old fox red Labrador – Bertie. Dr Katie and her team were our instantly able to help. We were overwhelmed to find that having had surgery for elbow dysplasia he was displaying signs of pain (not obvious to us!) but the subtle signs were picked up instantly by Dr Katie. Since starting the behavioural training, he has come on leaps and bounds. He is such a loving happy dog and is showing us how much he can do.
The whole process has been easy to access with a LOT of information for us to take on board but having access to it whenever we need to re read it has been vital. The support we have received along with positive encouragement for us as well as Bertie. We knew it would not be a quick fix but following the small steps in each consult has brought us wonderful results. Thank you from all of us!

"I found the behaviour consultation really informative and it made me realise how much we needed training as well as our dog. You think you are doing the right think but we have probably been making things worse."

"Just an update. What a transformation following his first practical on Saturday. His greeting to visitors was a lot more calm. Even had comments of "is he the same dog?". His harness and lead were way better when putting it on, thanks"

“Our veterinary behaviour cases are seen on a referral only basis. Which means that all cases must be referred by their vet. This is because all behaviour has emotional, learnt and physical health components affecting it. We need to address them all in order to see the most progress."

How is it different to "dog training"?

Veterinary behaviour Consults are a much more in depth approach, addressing and treating emotionally driven behaviours and the underlying factors causing these issues compared to teaching new behaviours. A comparison of teaching a dog to cope being left on their own vs sitting when asked.

How long does it take?

There are no quick fixes when dogs are struggling emotionally but we can help you to understand your dog, protect them and stop things from getting worse. Then teach you how to help them change how they feel to see the fantastic results all whilst maintaining a strong bond with your dog. We aim for significant behaviour change to occur over the period of some months.

How do you treat behaviour issues?

We look at and treat your dog as a whole including physical, emotional and cognitive approaches to behaviour. This includes management steps and active behavioural training. As Dr Katie is a veterinary surgeon she also has the ability to investigate, diagnose and treat medical aspects affecting your dog’s behaviour and prescribe behavioural modification medications, where necessary, to aide with progress.

Does it work?

Dogs are emotionally sentient beings, not robots — we can’t simply ‘program’ them for instant change. Be cautious of anyone guaranteeing 100% success, as behaviour is influenced by many factors and cannot always be controlled.
That said, we regularly see fantastic results, with complete resolution of behavioural concerns in many cases. In others, progress may be limited by medical conditions, breed predispositions, or normal behavioural drives. Even then, we work towards the best possible solutions. With effective management strategies and a deeper understanding of your dog, their behaviour is no longer seen as a problem but as something you can confidently manage.
